MARIE TURNOR LOOK BOOK

Marie Turnor makes beautiful handbags, clutches, wallets and accessories.  The entire collection is made right here in California, and we have had the pleasure of having them as a client for a few years now.  In addition to shooting all of their product photography, we also get asked to shoot their look books.  We had a lot of fun shooting this one in our downtown LA studio.

The Truth About Neil Strauss

rickett_sones_rickettland_neil_strauss_1

Neil Strauss is a renaissance man.  I first met Neil back when he was living The Game, way before the term “pickup artist” became a cultural meme.  I went to more than a few parties at the Hollywood Hills house where a lot of that story went down.  We became friends back then and we have both evolved to become artists a lot different than those kids who partied together in Hollywood.

As the years went on we lost contact but as fate would have it we both ended up living on the same street in Malibu (he moved there, I moved there, we literally ran into each other on the beach one day).  It was a very surreal and magical time for me and Sones, and getting back in touch with Neil was part of that magic.  He is a very inspiring person and we are grateful to know him.  He is literally the most driven artist I have ever known, his control over his own reality is astounding.

In his new book The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships, Neil exposes himself and the transformation he went through in order to save his relationship with Ingrid, his wife.  Sonia and I were there for a lot of that.  In just the same way that I was orbiting Neil’s life during The Game, Sonia and I were orbiting Neil’s universe during The Truth as well.

It is with great pride that I get to share these images we shot of our friend Neil Strauss, to promote his new book.  I have always looked up to Neil and his self-mastery, and I have been bugging him for a long time about shooting a portrait.  The right moment finally came and we were able to make some magic together.

TIM & ERIC & OYSTER

Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim editorial for Oyster magazine, shot by us.

Tim and Eric are very particular about everything they do, so we wanted to honor Eric’s idea of shooting this editorial with a “disposable camera look.”  Their “daughters” had no idea what was happening, but they played along and did an amazing job.

You can read the full article here, including a bit where they talk about the shoot.

SCOTT AUKERMAN – BETWEEN TWO FERNS

President Barak Obama appeared with Zach Galifianakis on Between Two Ferns (yep, really happened), and this historic event has won the show a Watch Award.

We were asked to shoot the show’s creator Scott Aukerman and executive producer Mike Farah at the Funny Or Die headquarters for the latest cover of ADWEEK.

So I guess we’re friends with the President now. Woo hoo!

Ron Finley, The Guerrilla Gardener

Ron Finley is a badass. He works hard to create wellness awareness in urban environments by planting gardens in low-income homes, sidewalks, you name it. In particular he aims to turn ‘food deserts’ (urban areas with no access to organic foods) into ‘food forests’ using what is readily available in these areas: open space.

RickettSones_RonFinley

Imagine a world where lunchtime means foraging in your own neighborhood. Where city kids can have organic salads instead of Happy Meals. Better yet, these kids can eat the meals they helped to grow! As Ron puts it, “If kids grow kale, kids eat kale.”

We had the privilege of photographing Ron in his garden, which was an amazing experience. Thriving only begins to describe how much life is bursting from his sidewalk utopia. After the shoot he loaded us up with armfuls of greens and we got to experience firsthand the fruits of his labors. Did you know there was a mustard green that tastes exactly like wasabi? Neither did we!

RickettSones_RonFinley-2

People like Ron are making the world a better place, and inspiring others to do the same. The rest of us need to put our shovels where our mouths are and go “plant some shit!”

LADY JANE ANNE THOMAS

So excited for our latest portrait with the beautiful and talented Jane Anne Thomas.  A definite star on the rise, she is one to keep your eye on.

MEET RYLAND BLACKINTON

Rickett_And_Sones_Ryland_Blackinton

We recently sat down with Ryland Blackinton, for an in-depth interview in an attempt to gain a glimpse into the the mind of the genius behind the man that is Ryland Backinton…reader discretion is advised…

R&S: Is Ryland Blackinton your real name?
RB: Yea, I was born Ryland Sharp, then my mother remarried and I was legally adopted by her husband when I was six. I’ve been Ryland Blackinton ever since.

R&S: Which one of your 60 million fans is your favorite?
RB: My mother

R&S: Are you rich?
RB: Absolutely

R&S: Does your guitar have a name?
RB: No

R&S:  What is your favorite note?
RB: A

R&S: What is the worst thing you’ve ever done onstage?
RB: I did a play in college about these two affluent gay teenagers who commit murder and get off on it and ultimately discover they’re in love with each other. It was really heavy material for a cast as under-rehearsed as ours. There was a scene where I had to make out with the other guy, but we put it off until dress rehearsals. Bad move. It was a very rushed, messy and unrealistic moment of performance for me. I feel bad for anyone who saw it.

R&S: Would you start a band with Paul McCartney if he insisted that you both had to play naked?
RB: Wow, tough call! …… Yes

R&S: If you were trapped on a desert island with Tom Petty would it be heaven or hell?
RB: Pure heaven

R&S: What’s the fastest you can play your guitar?
RB: Nirvana – Come As You Are. THAT fast

R&S: If you had to tattoo one album cover on your back what would it be?
RB: The White Album

R&S: If you lost both your arms would you learn to play with your feet or would you just be a baby and quit?
RB: Baby

R&S:  Why don’t you have a Facebook page?
RB: I already feel sufficiently ‘connected’

R&S:  Who would be your ultimate Fight Club opponent?
RB: Abraham Lincoln (pre-vampire hunter)

R&S:  Where would you take Jeff Lynn on a date?
RB: Dave and Busters (on MDMA)

R&S:  Rickett or Sones?
RB: SNES
